GSL ENERGY is proud to announce that its R60 DC Energy Storage System (DC ESS) has successfully obtained the latest ANSI/CAN/UL 9540:2023 (3rd Edition) Energy Storage System Safety Certification.
Following comprehensive testing and evaluation conducted by SGS, the R60 platform demonstrated full compliance with the latest safety requirements for energy storage systems in both the United States and Canada. This achievement further strengthens GSL ENERGY's commitment to delivering safe, reliable, and globally compliant energy storage solutions for residential, commercial, and industrial applications.
Unlike integrated ESS solutions that require battery systems and inverters to be certified and deployed as a fixed combination, GSL ENERGY has adopted an independent DC ESS certification strategy.
Under this approach, the battery system—including battery packs and the Battery Management System (BMS)—undergoes UL 9540 certification as a standalone energy storage platform without dependence on a specific inverter brand.
This architecture offers several key advantages:
GSL ENERGY assumes full responsibility for battery-side safety through comprehensive battery system design, BMS protection strategies, and rigorous certification testing, helping establish a strong foundation for overall system reliability.
System integrators and project developers can select inverter solutions based on project requirements, performance targets, and budget considerations, without being restricted to a predefined hardware combination.
The certified DC ESS platform can be integrated with compliant inverter solutions that meet applicable industry standards such as UL 1741 and IEEE 1547, providing greater flexibility across diverse project scenarios.
Independent system architecture allows for more adaptable project upgrades, capacity expansion, and long-term system optimization throughout the asset lifecycle.
As part of this certification milestone, the R60 energy storage platform obtained two SGS-issued UL 9540:2023 certifications, both based on the same core technology platform.
This accomplishment reflects the robustness of the system's design, safety engineering, and operational reliability. It also demonstrates GSL ENERGY's ability to support diverse regulatory and grid requirements across North America, helping project developers and EPC partners reduce compliance risks and accelerate project deployment.
Achieving independent DC ESS certification requires extensive testing, deeper engineering validation, and greater investment than conventional certification approaches.
For GSL ENERGY, however, the decision is straightforward.
We believe that the future of energy storage depends on three critical pillars:
Safety
Flexibility
Interoperability
Rather than limiting customers to a fixed system configuration, GSL ENERGY focuses on developing standardized DC energy storage platforms capable of supporting a wide range of applications and integration requirements.
By investing in higher certification standards today, we help our customers gain greater freedom in project design, future upgrades, operation, and maintenance throughout the system lifecycle.
The successful certification of the R60 under UL 9540:2023 represents more than regulatory compliance—it reflects GSL ENERGY's long-term commitment to energy storage safety, product innovation, and global market readiness.
Moving forward, GSL ENERGY will continue advancing DC energy storage technologies in alignment with the world's most stringent safety standards, providing safer, more flexible, and fully compliant energy storage solutions that empower partners across North America and around the globe.
