SDK Develops Graphite for Lithium-Ion Batteries in Electric Vehicles.

Tokyo, April 22, 2009
(JCN News Agency )-Showa Denko K. K.
(SDK) developed a new level of SCMG (TM)
Controlled micro-graphite as a large lithium negative material
Ion batteries for electric vehicles.
Since this material has been used in several electric vehicles that will be sold in Japan and overseas, the SDK has decided to increase the production capacity of scmg in Nagano prefecture, from the current 1,000 tons to 3,000 tons in 2012.
SDK plans to generate 8 billion yen in lithium carbon material sales
Ionbatteries, including this product, were launched in 2012.
SCMG is characterized by the first processing of carbon raw materials with sdk\'s proprietary technology to optimize its shape as an anode material and heating at high temperature in a special graphite furnace.
The use of SCMG improves the load current properties of lithium and the cycle life of charge and dischargeion batteries.
The improvement of load current characteristic can use high current, while the improvement of cycle life ensures a long time
Duration of battery use.
As a result, SCMG has been used for evs of various models to be launched in the world market this year.

High-performance batteries capable of storing large amounts of power in relatively small spaces.
Lithium is being developed by automobile and electrical manufacturers-
Ion batteries that meet this demand.
As part of the development effort, SCMG has been evaluated for automotive applications.
The capacity expansion SDK has begun to expand its SCMG capacity atOmachi, modifying special graphite furnaces and adding new powder handling units to be completed by the end of this year.
The SDK will build a competitive production environment through effective capital investment, making the most of the graphite electrodes produced by Omachi\'s existing facilities.
While carefully observing the trend of lithium demand
The SDK will make further investment in graphite and identify synergiesanode-
Material production facilities, with special graphite furnace as the center.
Total annual investment-
It is expected that 2012 will reach about 2 billion years. SDK\'s lithium-ion-battery-
In addition to SCMG, SDK\'s related carbon business has been producing and selling VGCFTM carbon nanotubes since 1996.
When added to the lithium electrode
VGCF (TM) provides better conductivity.
Demand for vgcf has been increasing due to the increase in lithium productionion batteries.
The increase in demand is also due to recent trends, and VGCF originally added only in the anode is now also added in the cathode.
So in 2007, the SDK expanded its VGCF capacity from 40 tons per year to 100 tons per year.
The SDK successfully developed SCMG-based on itslithium-
Ion battery evaluation technology developed with customers through VGCF research and development.

Based on high quality products with efficient production settings, seek synergy with the production capacity of the omachite ink electrode.
With the enthusiastic expansion of 2009 and 2010, the SDK is strengthening its R & D efforts in the field of environmental protection and energy conservation to meet the growing social needs.
In particular, we will strengthen research and development related to metals and inorganic materials (including graphite), which have a competitive advantage due to the accumulation of technology.
