Volt fire 3 weeks after crash prompts safety probe

Follow us: a Chevrolet Volt caught fire 3 weeks after the crash test, triggering a federal investigation.
New york (CNNMoney )--
Federal security regulators are investigating the safety of lithium.
A Chevrolet Volt battery pack caught fire three weeks after a crash test and then started using ion batteries.
According to GM, the crash test was conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which was sitting in the parking lot of the test facility when Volt caught fire.
NHTSA said they had investigated an incident and concluded that \"the crash test damaged Volt\'s lithium-ion battery and the damage caused a car fire, after the test was completed, it will take a few weeks for the fire.
The agency said, \"This is the only situation with the battery --

\"It goes on to say that it will perform additional tests on lithium volts --ion batteries.
Volt easily passed the test of the safety management department to protect the passengers of the vehicle, earning 5-
Star rating for overall safety, side impact and rollover risk and four-star rating for frontal impact protection.
\"First of all, I want to make it very clear that Volt is a safe car,\" Jim Federico, chief engineer of GM electric vehicles, said in a prepared statement.
\"We are working with NHTSA as it completes the survey.
GM spokesman Greg Martin said the automaker has been working with the security agency since the fire and cannot replicate the accident.
General Motors (GM, Fortune 500) has conducted more than 300,000 safety tests on Volt battery packs, he said.
\"The safety agreement for electric vehicles is clearly a concern for the industry,\" Federico said . \".
\"At GM, after a major collision, we have a security agreement to reduce the power of the electric vehicle\'s battery.
\"The Leaf of Volt and Nissan (NSANF), which went public in 2011, was the first large-scale market for lithium-
In the United States, ion-driven electric vehicles, although Volt also has a gasoline motor that expands its range.
Nissan sold more than 8,000 cars and Chevrolet sold more than 5,000 volts.
Besides GM and Nissan,

Ion batteries and Ford Motor (Fortune 500 F) are about to launch a high-usage model

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it is \"working with all automakers to make sure they have the right post
Collision protocol \", and stressed that battery-driven vehicles are not more vulnerable than gas-driven vehicles.
\"Let\'s be clear: NHTSA doesn\'t think electric cars are at a greater risk of fire than other cars.
