GSL ENERGY and local Partner Innovative Machines Sdn Bhd commissioned a containerized battery energy storage system at a large shopping mall in Malaysia. The installation combines two 2.3MWh liquid-cooled battery containers with two 625kW power conversion systems, providing 4.6MWh of nominal storage capacity and 1.25MW of combined rated PCS power. The project brings battery storage, power conversion, thermal management, protection, and energy management together in an outdoor commercial installation. Its design addresses the mall's peak demand management.

A shopping mall's electrical load changes throughout the day. Cooling, lighting, elevators, restaurants and entertainment facilities draw power at different rates, with overlapping demand during busy trading periods. For the operator, managing electricity costs requires an understanding of when these loads occur (especially with heavy EV charging) and how the applicable tariff is structured. The customer's sole objective is to reduce peak grid demand. The commercial battery storage system provides a resource that can be scheduled to minimize the maximum demand charge.
Charging and discharging decisions must account for competing priorities. Energy reserved for backup is unavailable for routine demand management, while aggressive discharge during trading hours may leave less capacity for a later grid event. The EMS operating strategy therefore needs to reflect the facility's load profile.
The two battery energy storage containers provide a combined nominal capacity of 4.6MWh. Their associated PCS units handle bidirectional conversion between the battery's DC supply and the AC electrical system.
The battery management system monitors battery conditions and applies relevant protections. The energy management system coordinates charging and discharging, while the monitoring platform provides operating information for inspection and technical support.
Power and energy are separate specifications in this installation. The 1.25MW rating describes the combined rated PCS power; 4.6MWh describes nominal stored energy. Actual battery discharge for AC output depends on connected loads, available state of charge, conversion losses, operating limits, and the reserve maintained by the control strategy.
Malaysia's hot, humid, and rainy conditions make thermal management and outdoor equipment protection important parts of system design. This project uses liquid cooling to manage battery temperatures, with enclosure protection and auxiliary systems configured for the installation requirements.
Locating the containerized BESS outside the shopping mall also concentrates the main storage equipment in a defined service area. This can reduce the need for indoor battery space and provide a dedicated route for maintenance access. Site planning must still accommodate equipment clearances, drainage, cable routes, lifting access, and applicable fire safety requirements.
Core equipment was preassembled and integrated at the factory, allowing internal connections and system interfaces to be checked before delivery. This approach moves part of the installation workload into a controlled manufacturing environment and reduces the number of assembly tasks required overseas.
Site work remains essential. Foundations, lifting, electrical connections, earthing, protection checks and integrated commissioning must be completed for the actual installation.
Product certification documents must correspond to the equipment supplied. Installation approval and acceptance depend on the applicable local requirements, site design and supporting project documentation.
This Malaysia installation provides a reference for shopping mall owners, commercial property operators and EPC contractors evaluating MWh-scale battery storage. Its configuration illustrates why battery capacity, PCS power, transformer capacity, and operating strategy need to be selected together.
For a project assessment, GSL ENERGY can review interval load data, electricity bills, the electrical single-line diagram, available installation space, and the required backup duration. These inputs establish a practical basis for discussing a containerized energy storage solution suited to the facility.
