1.25MW/4.6MWh Liquid-Cooled Battery Storage Project at a Shopping Mall in Malaysia

GSL ENERGY and local partner Innovative Machines Sdn Bhd commissioned a 1.25MW/4.6MWh battery energy storage system at a large shopping mall in Malaysia. Designed for peak shaving, the installation provides a controllable energy resource to help the facility reduce maximum grid demand.

BESS Containers for Shopping Mall Demand Management

Air conditioning, lighting, elevators, restaurants, and entertainment facilities drive a shopping mall's changing electricity demand. When multiple loads operate simultaneously, grid imports can rise sharply.

This project uses two 2.3MWh liquid-cooled BESS containers paired with two 625kW power conversion systems. Together, they provide 4.6MWh of nominal battery capacity and 1.25MW of combined rated PCS power.

The energy management system coordinates charging and discharging according to the facility's load profile and site controls. Stored energy can be dispatched during targeted demand periods to help limit peak grid imports. Actual performance depends on available state of charge, operating limits, and the applicable demand measurement intervals.

Outdoor Liquid-Cooled Battery Storage

Each battery energy storage system container houses LiFePO4 batteries, liquid cooling and protection equipment within a factory-integrated 20-foot enclosure.

Liquid cooling manages battery temperatures during operation, while the outdoor layout places the main storage equipment in a dedicated service area. The installation brings battery storage, power conversion, and energy management together to support the mall's demand management strategy.
